ABOUT ME
I’m Matthew McGibney, a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor (LCMHC) based in Durham, NC. I grew up in Durham and graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill in 2012. I lived in New York City until 2021, and while there I received my Master's degree in Mental Health Counseling at Hunter College.
I began working in counseling in 2018 at Inter-Care, a substance abuse treatment facility in New York. My clinical internship was at Kip Therapy, a psychodynamic training institute in Manhattan.
I currently provide couples counseling (Emotionally Focused Therapy) and individual therapy (psychodynamic) in Durham, NC.
SERVICES I OFFER
INDIVIDUAL THERAPY
In-Person and Virtual
Individual therapy is an opportunity to explore your feelings and thoughts in a safe and non-judgmental environment. I take a psychodynamic approach (drawing from AEDP and ISTDP) to individual therapy, which will help you to understand the root causes of your struggles and how to make meaningful changes in your life. You will be guided to develop insight into your personal history and relationships, and ultimately, come to a greater understanding of yourself.
COUPLES COUNSELING &
DISCERNMENT COUNSELING
In-Person and Virtual
Couples Counseling is a powerful way to strengthen relationships. I use Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) to help couples identify and work through any issues that may be causing distress in the relationship. Through this approach, couples can experience improved communication, closeness, and understanding.
Discernment Counseling is a form of counseling designed to help couples who are not sure if they should stay together or separate. It helps them to explore their options, clarify their feelings, and make an informed decision. Discernment Counseling provides the space and guidance to help couples navigate their relationship in a safe and effective manner.
I welcome people from all backgrounds to my practice, including couples from the LGBTQ+ community and clients in polyamorous relationships.
